Things Entrepreneurs Never Do

Flickr CC via Mat Simpson
Hello, Ken Lear here again!

One of the reasons that entrepreneurs are so successful is that they know what to do to become successful and productive. Even more, they know what not to do:

Second-guess themselves and their employees
Entrepreneurs are confident in themselves and their own abilities. You will never find them second-guessing their decisions or the decisions of those working around them. Entrepreneurs know that one must have confidence in oneself to remain constantly productive.

Refuse to learn new skills
Entrepreneurs thrive because they are on the bleeding edge of their industry. If an entrepreneur refused to learn new skills or be up to date on the new events and techniques in their industry, they would quickly fail. Entrepreneurs understand better than most that professional development is vitally important to career success.

Avoid networking and public speaking opportunities
While they may not always be in the mood to socialize and network, entrepreneurs know how to “turn it on” and put on a pleasant face to take advantage of networking events. Since entrepreneurs are self-made and generally run smaller businesses, they understand that if they aren’t their company’s biggest advocate (and actually go out and advocate for their business), then nobody will be.

Jealousy and envy
Being self-made, entrepreneurs are very good at embracing what makes them unique, successful, and special. Along with that knowledge is a mindset that doesn’t compare oneself to others, thereby experiencing jealousy or envy at another’s success or achievements. All that matters is their success. We could all benefit from this mindset.

Looking back at tough times
Entrepreneurs experience disappointment and failure like everyone else, but one difference is that they learn from their mistakes instead of dwelling on them. It is important to look back at tough times to learn something but never to beat yourself up about actually having failed.

Making excuses
Entrepreneurs know that when they fail, they shouldn’t make excuses. Learning from your mistakes is more important than finding some reason why you failed and that it wasn’t your fault. Instead, if you figure out how to do things better the next time, your efficiency and quality of work will likely increase.

Let failure stop them
Entrepreneurs understand that everyone fails at some point, and that failure is one part of the equation that includes taking chances and succeeding. You have to put yourself out there to make real innovations.

Multitask
Multitasking can distract your brain and essentially split your mind’s resources between two processes. This is not good! Instead, you should focus on doing one thing really well and devoting all of your energies to completing that task before moving on to something else. This will increase the quality of your work and help keep things from falling through the cracks when you are juggling multiple projects.

Tips to Better Business Decision Making

Flickr CC via _Hadock_
My name is Ken Lear, and I’m an entrepreneur, businessman, and leadership expert.

Learning to make good decisions in business is a requirement for being a great manager. Through using built-up experience and solid logic, better choices can be made that can help a company be more successful. Utilizing tactics that decision makers us can make a tough decision be easier than ever before. Decisions making does not come out of nowhere, it takes years of experience and practice to make the tough choices. Here are a few tips that I follow to make great decisions:

Remove Emotion

Many times when we are evaluating a decision, emotion can play a relative factor. We are all human beings with passion and tend to follow the way our heart tells us to go. For smart decisions to be made in business, we must never allow our emotional ties to cloud our judgment. Tap developing true judgment, and utilize facts to see the consequences of each action taken. Eliminating emotion from decision-making will give you a real sense of the implications the choice will create.

Utilize the Opinions of Others

Although we may want to make decisions all on our own, outside insight can help greatly when we are at a crossroads. Asking other peers or friends for their opinion can give you more information, and lead you to the right path. See what they believe is the right way , and going from there. They make choose a path that you might not want to follow, but at least you can see a viewpoint of someone else. Gaining their opinion of the right decision will allow you to develop a better hindsight of decision-making.

Clear Your Mind

The right path comes to us when we least expect it. Typically, we are so enthralled over a predicament that we tend to lose focus on the right answer. By doing things that can clear your mind, you will allow your brain to find the right answer all on its own. Exercising or even meditating can focus your mind on something else for the time being, and let the correct choice come to you. Never spend hours on end worrying over a decision. You have gotten yourself this far to succeed; trust yourself that you will figure it out on your own.

If Your Have A Feeling…

Although I think you should remove emotion from decision-making, you should also take in account your instincts and intuition. There will be times where you will make a decision that people disagree with. However, it is important to take risks and chances once in a while to truly succeed. A great path to success is to do things that no one else has done. Use facts and research to make a decision, but if you’re hesitant to go one way, always go with your gut feeling.

What it Takes to Be a Leader

Flickr CC via Mays Business School

Ken Lear is an expert in leadership, business, and entrepreneurship. He is currently working on opening a new office in Detroit, MI.

A lack of leadership for any company of team can have serious consequences.  Taking the responsibility of leadership is a daunting task, but if you’re up for it can be very rewarding. People always want to have a leadership role in their life, and that is how the world works.

A Great Leader…

Values Trust

Being able to trust someone with a task or information is crucial to a leader. A leader can’t do everything by themselves: they need a support team that they can help guide. Those that the leader trusts end up finding success. Trust leads to better collaboration and motivation. There is some risk in putting trust in people that shouldn’t be trusted, but it’s a type of risk that can be managed to forge bond with others

Provides Empowerment
More empowered employees means better business. When you can empower an employee, they will feel more worth in the company to make important decisions. This will only lead to more productive. Building management from the ground up may take effort and time, but an employee that has cadence and responsibility will only help to make work easier for leaders. It’s true that a great leader helps to make others leaders as well.

Has a Vision
Great leaders never dwell on the current day; they are always looking ahead. Leaders have a dream that they want other people to share. Through their actions and goals, a leader can show a team the vision they want to accomplish. A great leader will set direction and inspire loyalty fro their team. Looking ahead will make the future much easier to handle

Appreciates Their Team
No matter how great your product is or service, its all going to come down to how strong your team is. Invest is your team; let hem know that you appreciate them and are proud of them. If they need help, always be there to provide it. Loyalty can get you many places in life, and with a loyal team that you are constantly in communication with, nothing can stand in your way.

Years to Learn
A leader should never act like they have reached the peak of their career. There will always be new tactics to learn for being a leader, and a leader should always be seeking to get better. Leaders can even learn a lot for their team.  Things change everyday within the business world, so there will always be opportunities to learn. Keeping an open mind and being ready to learn something new is key to being a great leader.
